The
Tsunami Memorial at Baan Nam Khem: North of Khao Lak
The memorial at Baan Nam Khem, just
north of Khao Lak is simple, beautiful and heartbreaking
all at the same time.
Commemorating the Boxing Day 2004
tsunami that left many dead and injured - the site is
very worth a visit when traveling to the Khao Lak area.
Head north from Khao Lak towards
Takuapah and turn left after the #82 kilometer stone.
If you get to #83 - you went too far. Once in the
village area, you will drive at least two kilometers -
watch carefully for the sign, the memorial is not well
marked. People at some of the shops in the area
know enough English to help direct you if you get lost.
It is not a huge area - you can't get too far off track.
The Memorial Plaque

A shrine to one of the King's sons

A Chinese shrine on the grounds of the
memorial

The symbolic
wall of water - also a shrine - as you will see in the
next photo:

Many of these
on the wall. You can still feel what happened when
standing here - and the loss of so many.

The grounds at the Memorial
